TAPA Mentor Match Program

The TAPA Mentor Match returns!
About the Program
Established in 2019, the Tennessee Chapter of the American Planning Association (TAPA) Mentor Match Program connects planning students, emerging professionals, and experienced planners to foster a stronger, more supportive planning community. The program promotes leadership development, career growth, and meaningful professional relationships by providing opportunities for mentors to share their knowledge and for mentees to build skills, set goals, and explore career paths.
How It Works
The TAPA Mentor Match Program is a year-long opportunity that connects planning students and emerging professionals with experienced mentors to support career development and leadership growth.
Participants are expected to meet at least twice, either virtually or in person, and must be current TAPA members or students in a Tennessee-based planning or related program.
Matches are made based on shared interests, goals, and location when possible. Mentors offer guidance, feedback, and insights from their professional journey, while mentees are encouraged to set clear goals, take initiative, and actively engage.
The program emphasizes mutual respect, consistent communication, and professionalism, with benefits including skill-building, networking, and knowledge exchange for both mentors and mentees.
Get Involved
Participants begin by completing a sign-up form that outlines their background, interests, and goals. Matches are thoughtfully made by the program team, prioritizing shared career interests, goals, and—when possible—geographic proximity to encourage in-person connections. Once paired, participants receive an introduction email with guidance to help kick-start a successful mentoring relationship.
