The City of Oak Ridge is seeking a codes officer to help support exponential, recent growth in real estate, and to make sure our existing properties are safe, clean and helping build the tax base.  Our philosophy is to help people do things right rather than catch them doing it wrong!

Qualified applicants for Codes Enforcement Officer OR Senior Codes Enforcement Officer, will be considered. 

   POSITION:        Code Enforcement Inspector

   SALARY:          Pay Grade – K; Step 1 - $42,619.20 annually

This position inspects and investigates complaints to verify compliance with adopted codes and ordinances of the City; to safeguard public health, safety and general welfare.  This position is also responsible for related administrative functions as it relates to documentation of inspections.

Required Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications

  • High School Diploma/equivalent and three (3) years’ experience in inspections or general construction or alternative equivalent training or experience
  • Must be certified by the International Code Council (ICC) Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector, or able to achieve certification within six (6) months.  Consideration may be given for additional certifications to meet this requirement.
  • New hire will be given six (6) months to obtain ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification.  Second certification must be obtained by the end of the eighteenth (18) month of employment. Specialty type must be approved by the Codes Official.

   POSITION:       Senior Code Enforcement Inspector

   SALARY:           Pay Grade – M; Step 1 - $47,860.80 annually

This position performs full range residential and commercial inspections and investigates complaints to verify compliance with adopted codes and ordinances of the City; to safeguard public health, safety and general welfare.  This position is also responsible for related administrative functions as it relates to documentation of inspections and providing expert assistance to other Inspectors.

Required Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications

  • Associates degree in a construction trade and three (3) years of experience, or five (5) years’ experience in inspections and/or general construction.
  • Must be certified by the International Code Council (ICC) and eligible for state licensure by the State of Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance as a Building Inspector in three (3) or more specialties; which includes at a minimum Building and any two (2) specialties in Plumbing, Mechanical or Electrical; Building Certification with Electrical and Plumbing certifications preferred.
  • Consideration may be given for additional certifications to meet this requirement. 
  • Specialty type must be approved by the Building Official.
