Assist in reviewing the work of the staff responsible for providing code enforcement services 

Assist in providing technical oversight and training to employees, including the areas of work methods, techniques, and procedures 

Research, analyze, and interpret social, economic, population, and land use data and trends

Provide information to the public regarding zoning, land use, subdivision regulation, design review regulation, and the Comprehensive Plan 

Confer with, and advise, architects, builders, attorneys, contractors, engineers, real estate agents, and members of the general public regarding City development policies and standards

 Review development proposals and applications for compliance with appropriate regulations

 Oversee the subdivision plat recording process following completion of the plat approval process by the Planning Commission and the Board of Aldermen

Perform other duties as directed

 Regular in Person Attendance




 Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or practical experience representing at least three years in municipal planning

 Principles and practices of urban planning and development, economics and statistics

 Reading building plans, surveys, subdivision plats and maps

 Familiarity with ArcView and literacy with Microsoft Word/Excel, and Power Point

Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driver history

 Regularly scheduled hours year-round, frequently works overtime/at night; on call only in emergency situations

 90% of the work is indoors; 10% of the work is outdoors in all types of weather conditions

Recent developments, current literature, sources of information, and research techniques related to urban planning and development

 Organizational practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs 

Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting.

 City Codes and Ordinances, including, but not limited to, the Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, Sign Regulations, the Design Review Ordinance, and the Municipal Code.

Street layout of the City and surrounding unincorporated areas

Federal and State laws, regulations, codes and statues concerning the work of the department

 Standards and regulations concerning employee safety

 Good mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division and multiplication

 Proper grammar and use of the English language – both in verbal and written communication

 General functions and operations of municipal government

Deal with others in a pleasing, professional manner and maintain professional composure in heated situations

 Communicate effectively with residents, elected officials, other City employees, and contractors – both in verbal and written communication

Maintain confidentiality and follow departmental and City policies and procedures

Ability to coordinate several tasks concurrently and prioritize daily work flow

Meet specified/required deadlines to include making decisions within specified time restraints

 General knowledge of the layout of the City of Olive Branch

Work autonomously when necessary but as a good team member as well
