A Day in the Life of a Project Planner
You are part of an interdisciplinary team planning and designing multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from streetscapes and retrofits in urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment.
As a Project Planner you manage multiple projects, technical tasks, lead analyses, work directly with our clients, represent Toole Design in project and stakeholder meetings, and reinforce our reputation as trusted experts. You collaborate with staff across all disciplines to deliver a variety of exciting projects focused on making places and travel experiences better and more equitable for everyone. You are at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, integrating input from a broad range of stakeholders to create transformational plans that lead directly to implementation.
Our projects range in scale from national multimodal planning research and design guidance for the Federal Highway Administration to state, regional, and local pedestrian, bicycle, and transit plans. We work on multimodal corridor studies, Vision Zero, Safe Routes to School, trails and greenways, complete streets, transit planning, wayfinding, bike parking strategies, and downtown streetscapes. We push ourselves and our clients to proactively think about equity and innovation every step of the way.
Qualifications of a Project Planner:
- A bachelor's degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, engineering, public health, or a related field, or additional experience
- A minimum of 4 years of planning experience at a consulting firm, public entity, non-profit, or research center
- Relevant work experience in one or more of the following areas: multimodal transportation planning, transportation safety, inclusive and equitable public engagement, transit, trails, and wayfinding
- Experience independently managing projects or tasks
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and multi-phased projects
- Strong writing skills and experience working as a support and/or lead writer for planning documents
It would be a plus if you have any of the following:
- A master's degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, engineering, public health, or a related field
- Proficiency using QGIS and/or ArcGIS and creating online interactive maps
- Experience using Excel for data and demographic analysis
- Experience creating surveys, data collection strategies, and community and stakeholder engagement
- Strong communication and cultural competency with people from racial backgrounds different than your own; Spanish language abilities are a plus
- Proficiency in graphic design, layout, and production using InDesign and other programs in the Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience in the various stages of marketing - business development, proposal strategy and writing, and interviewing

We are targeting a salary range for $73,000 to $84,000 for this position.
Work Schedule for a Project Planner:
This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours per week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2 days per week. The Northwest Arkansas office of Toole Design opened in 2023 and is in downtown Bentonville, currently in Ledger Bentonville on Main Street. The office is easily accessed on foot or by bicycle.
